You might think that chopping might make you feel cooler but it doesn’t at all
Heat from the radiators, people and other things still flows into your living room long after your heating is switched off. Chop-Cloc understands this and uses time-based calculations to make sure your heating is back on in time for you to stay comfortable.
Chop-Cloc reduces energy use by placing regular periods of off time into your heating system. We call this ‘chopping’.
Try this quick experiment. Go and switch your central heating off for 20 minutes. Now go and switch it back on. Feel any different? No, you still feel as comfortable as you did 20 minutes ago. The heating is back on before your house has cooled enough for you to notice. You’ve just made a successful chop!
Chop-Cloc does this every hour automatically and you don’t need to be a scientist to understand that when something is off more it uses less energy.
Central heating systems are working too hard, they are designed for very cold weather, which for most of the year, is not the case.
Here is a typical central heating period between 3pm and 9pm. This system is active all the time (but may be temperature controlled by a thermostat).
Above we see the same system but with Chop-Cloc installed. There are now regular 30 minute periods of off time added which save energy.
You may assume that your thermostat is controlling your energy usage perfectly well. It’s better than nothing but it’s not as good as you think it is.
It’s in the wrong place. Thermostats are often located in a cooler location than the main living space, usually the hall. This means the thermostat calls the heating on earlier and more often than is needed.
It’s too sensitive. Most thermostats work to plus or minus 0.5 °C. This means, if set at 20 °C it will ask for more heat when it measures 19.5 °C , way before you feel the need for more heat.
What it measures isn’t a good indicator of your comfort. Thermostats measure air temperature and people don’t get their heat from the air, they get it from radiators, walls and other solid objects, other people and the sun.
